On Sunday the 5th March 2017 at 15.30 GMT the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) hosted the 7th Woman Scream International Poetry and Arts Festival at the open air rotunda on the premises of the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA).
The co-ordinator, Mariska Araba Taylor-Darko, a poet and writer said to the guests that “This event, themed “A scream for freedom to all the first in the world” was part of a worldwide chain of events started by the founder of the Women Poets International Movement (Mujeres Poetas Internacional, MPI), Jael Uribe of the Dominican Republic to make people aware of the un-equality and discrimination of children and women.”
The event coincided with the 60th Anniversary of the Association and the 60th Anniversary of the independence of our country Ghana. The programme was held under the umbrella of GAW Sunday, a monthly event open to poets, performers, writers, and children. Present were some executives of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, President of the National Media Commission and President of GAW together with the Vice President of GAW and other executives.
A selection of poets performed spoken word about child marriages, women’s emancipation and freedom. Hafrikan Prince, a poet, director and performer and his team performed a short sketch showing how some children were given away in marriage at an early age because of parental poverty and ignorance of the damage these early marriages cause to the girls.
Others performed song on the theme, read poems and written works. There was a short debate about the molestation of women, and children and why it was wrong for men to think that the way they dressed gave them permission to do what they wanted. There was a musical performance by a duo with a flute and guitar playing traditional Ghanaian Highlife which got people dancing.
The performers were Erica Mawufemor, Native Girl Nana Afia Oppong –Kwakye, Michael Gasu, Faiba Bernard, Dr. Gheysika Agambila, Udoh Sylvester Savour, Hafrikan Prince, Abdulai Musah Rakia, Raymond Tuvi, MzPoetry-Gh (That Ewe Girl) Brenda Bakomora, Naa Kwaale Dove, Oswald Okaitey, H.L.Daniels, Martin Agbenavor, Nana Ofori-Atta, Maame Mozuma Asamoah and Adjin Tettey.
Participants and performers were presented with certificates and we ended around 7pm.
